In February 2024, in honor of African and Black History Month, Jamika Smith, the Founder and Executive Director and lead upholsterer of Teena's Legacy, will curate a dynamic exhibit at the Miller Beach Arts & Creative District in Gary, Indiana. The exhibit's theme is "Bringing Our Seats to the Table: African and Black History, Covered and Re-Covered".
We sincerely seek your sponsorship to support Teena's Legacy's extraordinary exhibition. In the spirit of African tradition and strong community heritage, we present an exceptional one-of-a-kind art experience showcasing established and emerging artists. The exhibit includes an intergenerational group from the Northwest Indiana Region and the Chicagoland area.
Our goal is to create a transformative experience that celebrates the power of art and culture. Drawing inspiration from our ancestor Shirley Chisholm and her iconic quote, "If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring your own folding chair," each chair will convey a story representing the struggles and resilience of African and Black History. The exhibit will feature over 14 recycled chairs, a re-upholstered couch and loveseat, and three tables complemented with visual and textile art. Through this exhibition, we aim to provide a unique and compelling entry point for people to examine and engage in critical discussions about the traumas and triumphs of African and Black History, using upholstery as a medium to pave the way.
